Nonsurgical Options for a Double Chin

A consultant points to a smiling client's eye area during a facial assessment with a mirror at a beauty clinic Bali.

A double chin is a description, not a diagnosis. Three quite different factors can produce a similar silhouette.

That is why clients seeking double chin treatment in Bali can be disappointed. The treatment itself may have been reasonable, but the underlying cause was misidentified. Before choosing anything, the submental area needs to be assessed for what is actually creating the fullness.

Not sure what is causing yours? Fat, loose skin, and chin structure need completely different treatments, and they are easy to confuse. A doctor-led assessment at Anaya Aesthetics, a beauty clinic Bali, identifies the cause before any device is chosen. Book an assessment on WhatsApp. The fee is IDR 300,000 plus 11% tax (IDR 333,000) and is waived if you proceed with treatment.

Three Different Causes

Look at the area beneath the jaw and separate the contributors.

  • Submental fat. Soft fullness beneath the jawline, often influenced by genetics and body composition. It can be present even in people who are otherwise lean.
  • Skin laxity. The tissue has lost elasticity, and the contour has softened. Excess skin can contribute to a less defined jawline even when there is little excess fat.
  • Chin and jaw structure. A recessed chin or a less defined jaw can make the area beneath the chin appear fuller, regardless of the amount of submental fat. No amount of fat reduction changes the underlying skeletal proportions.

Most people have some combination of these factors. The proportions determine the plan.

What Causes It and What Treats It

Main contributorWhat you noticeOften considered
Submental fatSoft fullness, even when lean HIFU with an appropriate protocol
Skin laxity Softened contour, loose skin HIFU or Exilis Ultra 360
Tissue descent Jawline has dropped Threadlift to reposition tissue
Recessed chin Profile lacks projection Chin filler for structural support

This is a guide only. Most people need more than one approach, decided at assessment.

Where HIFU Fits

Focused ultrasound can be relevant when submental fullness is partly related to skin laxity and, with appropriate protocols, can also be used to target submental fat.

At selected depths, focused ultrasound creates controlled thermal coagulation points that trigger tissue remodelling and new collagen formation, which can improve the appearance of lax skin. Some focused ultrasound protocols have also been studied for reducing submental fat.

A study of high-intensity focused ultrasound for unwanted submental fat in Asian patients reported the treatment as safe and effective for the study population.

At Anaya Aesthetics, options include HIFU and the V-Shape HIFU Facial, which are used to address the lower face and jawline.

Expect a gradual result. Collagen remodelling develops over weeks to months, so HIFU is not a treatment that produces its full result on the day.

Where Radiofrequency Fits

Exilis Ultra 360 combines radiofrequency and ultrasound energy and is used for skin tightening and contouring.

Radiofrequency heats tissue to stimulate collagen remodelling through a different mechanism from focused ultrasound. In practice, the choice depends on the degree of laxity, tissue thickness and quality, and whether excess submental fat is also contributing to the contour.

The appropriate technology and settings are determined during assessment rather than by the location of the fullness alone.

Where Threads Fit

A patient with closed eyes receives a non-invasive skin tightening treatment on her jawline using a handheld device operated by a professional at a beauty clinic bali.

If genuine tissue descent is contributing to a softened jawline, a threadlift may be considered to reposition tissue.

Threads work mechanically by placing absorbable sutures along planned vectors to reposition soft tissue. They do not remove submental fat or change the underlying bone structure.

For someone whose main concern is tissue position rather than excess volume, this distinction matters.

Where Structure Is the Answer

If a recessed chin is the primary contributor, adding structural support to the chin can change the profile more effectively than trying to reduce the submental area.

Dermal filler can be placed strategically to support the chin and improve the relationship between the chin and jawline. It works on facial proportions rather than directly removing submental fullness.

Our piece on a structural approach to filler explains this reasoning in more detail.

This is the contributor that is often overlooked. A client may spend years trying to reduce submental fat when the main issue is actually a relatively small or recessed chin.

What Nonsurgical Treatment Will Not Do

Two honest limits are worth understanding.

  • It will not replicate surgery. Significant, long-standing submental fat combined with substantial excess skin may be better addressed surgically. Nonsurgical treatments have limits, and improvement depends on your starting anatomy.
  • It will not stop changes caused by significant weight fluctuation. Changes in body weight can alter facial and submental fat, which may affect the appearance of the treatment result.

Sessions, Cost and Limits

At Anaya Aesthetics, HIFU for the double chin starts at IDR 2,000,000; Exilis Ultra 360 for the face, including the submental area, starts at IDR 3,000,000; threadlift starts at IDR 5,000,000; and chin filler starts at IDR 3,700,000 per ml. All prices exclude 11% tax, and packages are available. The number of sessions and any combination are set at consultation, which is IDR 300,000 plus tax (IDR 333,000) and is waived if you proceed.

Two honest limits are worth understanding. It also will not stop changes from significant weight fluctuation, which can alter facial and submental fat and affect a result.

Posture and Photography

This is worth saying because it can save people from treating a problem they do not actually have.

The appearance of the submental area can change considerably with head position, posture, and camera angle. Looking down or photographing the face from below can make the area appear fuller.

Before committing to treatment, assess your profile and jawline in a mirror at eye level rather than relying on a single phone photograph taken from an unusual angle.

Make an Appointment

Gloved hands gently examine the forehead and jawline of a woman to evaluate her facial profile for treatments at a beauty clinic bali.

The useful question is not which device treats a double chin. It is which factor is producing yours, and in what proportion.

Our medical team at Anaya Aesthetics, a beauty clinic in Bali, assesses submental fat, skin quality, and underlying facial structure before recommending treatment. For treatment planned over several sessions, current offers and VIP membership tiers are also worth reviewing.

To have the submental area properly assessed, make an appointment with our medical team on WhatsApp.

Three causes produce one silhouette. Treating the wrong one is the most common reason results disappoint.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a double chin be treated without surgery?

Often yes, when the cause is moderate fat, laxity, or chin structure. Severe, long-standing cases may still be better suited to surgery.

Which treatment is best?

There is no single best. It depends on whether fat, loose skin, tissue position, or chin structure is driving yours, which is what the assessment determines.

How soon will I see results?

HIFU and radiofrequency build gradually over weeks to months. Filler changes the profile immediately; threads reposition tissue with some immediate change.

Will results last if my weight changes?

Significant weight fluctuation can alter submental fat and affect the result, so a stable weight helps.

Is one session enough?

Usually a short course or a combination works best. Your doctor will set the number at consultation.
